Within an idyllic setting on the shores of Lough Derg, Ireland's "pleasure lake" with breathtaking views of Counties Clare and Tipperary, Killaloe offers a haven of tranquillity to those who seek it, and a myriad of activities those looking for a more action packed break.
Sheltered by the hills of Slieve Bernagh on one side and those of the Arra mountains in Tipperary. Killaloe lies where the river Shannon resumes it's course out of the neck of Lough Derg.
| A narrow 13 arched stone bridge leads from Killaloe in Clare to Ballina, County Tipperary. The towns have been awarded Heritage Town status because of their rich historical past. |

|
Lough Derg is set in some of Ireland's most beautiful countryside. Winding uncrowded country roads encircle the lake. Forest walks have been developed on the shoreline. Hedges of fuchsia abound. There are many undisturbed and natural areas which are ideal for birdwatching and exploring. Many of the lakeside walks have picnic facilities nearby. |
![]() |
In addition to these local walks, there are many other walks suited to the more serious hill walkers.
The Lough Derg Way stretches from out in two directions from Killaloe and Ballina. To the south it travels 26km (16 miles) to Limerick, and to the north it travels 32km (20 miles) to Dromineer on the Tipperary side. The canal bank dominates a major part of the southern section of the walk, while the northern route is an uphill climb overlooking Lough Derg.
The East Clare Walkway follows a 180km circular route through some of East Clare's most spectacular and varied scenery. From the heritage town of Killaloe/Ballina on Lough Derg, the way crosses the Slieve Bernagh mountains before descending to the Clare lakeland areas around Tulla and Feakle. Circling the beautiful Lough Graney, the route then climbs again over the rugged boglands of the Slieve Aughtys back towards Lough Derg. With wonderful views over the lough with its islands and distant mountains, the way returns through the hills towards Scarriff and on to complete its circuit back at Killaloe.
For more information on walks around Lough Derg, check out the Irish Inland Waterways website at http://walks.iwai.ie/derg/index.shtml

On a clear day why not take a drive to the west of county clare and view the spectacular Cliffs of Moher. The Cliffs are 8km long and 214m high, it is here that one can most easily get a feel for the wildness of the terrain over which the Celts |
wandered, for although they built imposing castles, very often they preferred the outdoor nomadic life and enjoyed the hunt. | |
The tower was built in 1835 by Cornelius O'Brien, a descendant of Brian Boru. The High King of Ireland, and the O'Brien's of Bunratty Castle, Kings of Thomond, as an observation point for the hundreds of tourists who even then visited the Cliffs.
O'Brien's Tower is the best location from which to view the Cliffs, from this vantage point one can see the Aran Islands, Galway Bay, as well as The Twelve Pins and the Maum Turk Mountains to the north in Connemara and Loop Head to the South.
Opening Times - O'Brien's Tower - March to October 29th (weather permitting) 9.30am to 18.00pm.
Visitor Centre - all year 9.00am to 19.00pm.
Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre - open year round 9.30am to 17.30pm. June
